Trying to be...

2004-03-05 - 7:52 a.m.

This week's Friday Five, after a very very long hiatus, begins with what was...

1. ...your first grade teacher's name?

Miss Eriquez. And I loved her, she was so pretty and kind and mild-tempered. She had a beautiful haircut, a pre-Dorothy Hammil wedge cut (because it was only 1974, and didn't Dorothy hit the big time a bit later in '76 or '78? I can't remember, but I thought it was more like third grade). Anyway, Miss Eriquez had to leave part-way through the year because she had a baby, which was very sad. Miss Stark took over for her, and like her name she was firm, took no-nonsense and was a very large woman. I liked her, but not as much as I loved Miss Eriquez.

2. ...your favorite Saturday morning cartoon?

Sadly, being Jewish meant that by the time I was in third or fourth grade I had to go to Saturday school (younger than that we did Sunday school), and I remember being really pissed off that I would miss cartoons. Sunday only had those lame Christian Davey and Goliath shows....but I think before making the switch the entire Hannah Barbara Saturday morning superstar line-up was my favorite -- some cartoons and some "real" shows, always full of fantasy and hijinks and magical magical color combinations.

3. ...the name of your very first best friend?

Rachel. We were best friends because our moms were (and are) best friends and we were only 2 weeks apart in age. We did sleepovers a lot and play dates, but she was always a very bossy kid. When we got older, I realized we fell into the "beautiful swan/ugly duckling" pairing, and I always felt like the ugly, fat sidekick to her grace and charm. However, she's always been a sad person with a sense of entitlement, and she's grown to be an unhappy unfulfilled adult who seemed to have peaked in high school, which is always sad.

I had lots of best friends growing up though, I've always been a social kid.

4. ...your favorite breakfast cereal?

Sugar cereals were a special special treat for us, only for the rare occasion. So for regular cereals it was the basic cheerio, wheaties, rice krispie stuff. When we did get to buy sugar cereals, I believe my sisters and I would fight over either Alphabits, Honeycombs, AppleJacks, Froot Loops (back then was it spelled correctly? I can't remember?), or Lucky Charms (back when there were only a few marshmellow treats in the rainbow!).

I've always liked mix n' match cereal, where you pour a little of this and a little of that. I prefer that both in my cereal w/milk meal and in my cereal in a cup as snack.

...your favorite thing to do after school?

Play, play, play.

When the weather was nice, we would explore the neighborhood woods, examining new treasures and climbing trees, dissecting worms or hunting for turtles. Ice skating and roller skating and bike riding and neighborhood kickball games and kick the can.

When the weather wasn't nice, I liked to play by myself (or with a friend) indoors - barbies, "school", practice my clarinet and pretend to be a band leader (I would have different "students" play different parts - some of us were quite good, others were atrocious!).

I have always been a reader, and some days would find me curled up in the window seat w/a blanket, snack and a book. Not to stir until dinnertime.

Oh, but afterschool was always time for a snack. I used to have the most insane "snacks" that really would constitute a full adult meal (if not adult binge!). I can't believe I did that every day, but can understand why I've had a weight issue for as long as I can remember.
