Trying to be...

2003-08-04 - 8:16 a.m.

Whenever I spend quality time with girlfriends, I think to myself "I need to do this more often".

Saturday night was spent with some amazing women (and I'm not just saying that in case they are reading this diary). Six women, as different as different can be...and yet, so incredibly similar in so many ways. The details in each of our lives vary drastically --- age, location, occupation, family composition, etc. And yet the basic principles right on target --- intelligent, caring, "good" people; funny, sensitive, respectful, beautiful feminist women.

There is something magical when a group of women join together. When no-one is being catty (ok, I admit, at times we were ALL being catty --- but not to each other!), when its not about impressing each other or trying to one-up. When the conversation flows freely, topic to topic, digresses and returns....becomes somber, then silly. Political and personal. When no-one is preoccupied with "does my ass look fat if I sit like this" and no-one has that anxious "oh my god, do they think I'm stupid? do I fit in?" aura about them.

Something about sitting, hour after hour, munching on hors d'oevres, drinking cocktails, and not noticing the passing of time. When you look at your watch and think "oh my! How did it get to be 3:30 already?" and knowing that if you didn't have to function the following day, you could easily keep going until sunrise. The beauty in waking in the morning, full of pajamas and sleep in your eyes, and leisurely greeting the day while recapping the events of the night before....having coffee and pancakes, and sharing those early childhood memories that somehow breakfast-time invokes in ways that other times of the day does not.

And then I think "I feel badly for people who don't have people like this in their lives".
